R Balki’s Pad Man has piqued the curiosity of moviegoers due to its innovative plotline. The social drama, which stars Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham who invented the low-cost sanitary pad-making machine.

BREAKING CONVENTIONS

Over the last few years, Akshay has been consciously taking up projects that address social causes. Pad Man is no different. It promises to offer a great mix of entertainment with a message attached to it. A dialogue in the movie, which states, ‘Women strong, country strong,’ underlines the importance of menstrual hygiene for a woman’s health.

In a recent interview with After Hrs, Akshay had said, “Do you know that almost 82 percent of Indian women do not have access to pads? They actually use cloth, leaves, rakh (ash) and bhusa (hay). Women in rural India haven’t understood the necessity of a sanitary towel...”

SPREADING THE WORD

The biopic has also sparked conversations on foreign shores as well as in the digital space. On January 18, Pad Man became the first Indian movie to be showcased at The Oxford Union, one of the most reputed debating societies in the world. Twinkle Khanna, who turns producer with the film, spoke about the significance of menstrual hygiene at the event. Recently, Akshay hosted a special screening for Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, who liked the movie and was vocal about the issues addressed in it.

BOLLYWOOD TAKES UP THE #PADMANCHALLENGE

Bollywood, too, has put its weight behind the movie by participating in the #PadmanChallenge wholeheartedly. The viral campaign saw some of the biggest stars including Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Deepika Padukone among others holding a sanitary napkin in their hand, supporting the film and the cause attached to it. The junta now gets to meet this new-age superhero as he steps on the big screen.

Produced by Mrs Funnybones Movies, SPE Films India, KriArj Entertainment, Cape of Good Films and Hope Productions, Pad Man releases worldwide today.
