Master of None star Aziz Ansari responds to sexual harassment claim against him

Master of None star Aziz Ansari has responded to the sexual harassment allegations made against him by a 23-year-old woman he briefly dated in September 2017.

The woman came forward to tell her story when she saw Ansari win his first Golden Globe Award for his Netflix series wearing a 'Time's Up' pin on his lapel.

The graphic account of the night by the woman alleges that Ansari ignored her verbal and non-verbal cues that she was uncomfortable with his acts in his New York City apartment.

Responding to the claim, the 34-year-old comedian issued a statement via his publicist.

"In September of last year, I met a woman at a party. We exchanged numbers. We texted back and forth and eventually went on a date. We went out to dinner, and afterward we ended up engaging in sexual activity, which by all indications was completely consensual," the statement read.

"The next day, I got a text from her saying that although “it may have seemed okay,” upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable. It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.”

“I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture,” he said. “It is necessary and long overdue.”

Known for his roles in Parks and Recreation and Master of None, Ansari wrote a book on love and relationships titled Modern Romance. He is also known for talking about the awkwardness of bad dates during his stand up shows.

The second season of Ansari's Master of None dealt with the sexual harassment in the entertainment industry and the debut season had featured story arcs about bad dates.

The claim against Aziz Ansari sparked a debate on social media over whether this incident chronicled by the woman is a case of sexual misconduct or a bad date.
